Author Guidelines

kalimat invites authors to submit articles that concisely introduce a term or concept from the Arabic literary and manuscript tradition. The primary audience includes both expert scholars and students; therefore, articles must be written in clear, non-expert American English. The aim is to present an encyclopedic reading of a lemma within a context or corpus agreed upon with the editors. Standard contributions should be 3000 words in length, excluding endnotes and bibliography, and must not exceed 4000 words.

Manuscripts should be prepared in Microsoft Word or RTF format using a 12-point Unicode font, such as Times New Roman or Calibri. Paragraphs should be short and separated by an extra line break without indentation, except for block quotations. Headings must use the built-in heading styles (H2, H3) and remain unnumbered. Authors are responsible for ensuring that direct quotations of entire passages from Arabic are provided in both the original language and script (preferably using the Scheherazade font) and English translation.

Please ensure the article follows the required structure: (1) title=lemma; (2) short introduction; (3) a short description of the corpus; (3) analysis and main findings incl. examples; (4) interpretation; (5) conclusion and further discussion; (6) endnotes; (7) bibliography; (8) further reading." All annotations should be submitted as numbered footnotes, and a complete bibliography must be included at the end of the text. Citations and bibliographic entries must follow the Chicago Manual of Style. Please confirm that the IJMES transliteration style is used consistently for Arabic, while established English words (e.g., Islam, Qurʾan, sharia, madrasa, Sufism) should appear in their standard forms.

Before you submit, confirm that your article is structurally complete, that examples and transliteration are accurate, and that you have prepared the additional materials. Below is a checklist to help you.
